Open another RentTracker Database

On occasion you may want to open another RentTracker database to view its contents. Whether it’s a backed up copy of your database or a separate database containing former tenants, you can browse its contents by doing the following.

Notes: All other RentTracker windows (Add/Edit windows, Label windows, etc.) must be closed before you may open a previously backed-up RentTracker database.

To open a backed-up database, go to File in the main window and select "Open Another RentTracker Database". Then select the database you want. This feature is valuable when it comes to keeping a separate database of previous tenants, or future candidates.

The file you select MUST be a valid RentTracker database for proper operation. Also, you should only open databases that were saved from the same version of RentTracker. Although a saved database in version 2.30 may open properly in version 2.41, this may not be the case in future versions of RentTracker.

RentTracker can only have one database open at a time, so the active database will be closed after opening another one.

"To Backup or Not to Backup ---that is the question."

Why do I want to backup my database?

It is always a good idea to keep a backup of your RentTracker database.

Although RentTracker saves your records as you enter them in the add/edit windows, you may want to insure the protection of this information by backing it up. The database is where all your personal information is stored (tenants, buildings, etc.), and if it were to get corrupted, all could be lost.

So periodically backup to a new file name (preferably on a different storage media) so that it could be opened later if anything were to happen.

Note: We recommend that you backup your database on a regular interval.(for example every Friday night)

How do I backup my database?

The Backup process.

All other RentTracker windows (Add/Edit windows, Label windows, etc.) must be closed before attempting a backup!

If everything but the main window is closed. From the File drop down menu on the main window and select "Backup Database".

A dialog box will open that will allow you to name the file. Choose a new name (one that is descriptive of the database contents or contains the date of the backup) and select Save.

There is no need to backup the active database under the same name since it is saved as you work.

After the backup is complete, you may continue to work on the original database.
